Our chapter celebrated the Signing of the Treaty of Paris on November 8, 2008 at the Wilshire Country Club. A 100+ sold out attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch and a program delivered by Ben Franklin / Gene Collins. The Los Angeles-Eschscholtzia Society, NSCAR, led the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Los Angeles-Eschscholtzia Chapter presented a new outdoor American Flag to the Larchmont Charter School and the St. Ambrose Academy on Thursday, June 11, 2009. Among the 220 students and adults present that day, several leaders of the community were there to show their support. These Community Leaders included Councilmember Tom LaBonge, Captain Richards from Fire Station 8, Officer Darrell Davis from the LAPD, Amy Vuckovich, member/coordinator of the event and Debbie Palmer, Regent of Los Angeles-Eschscholtzia. During the singing of the National Anthem, the firefighters raised the flag. The student body sang a song about the flag. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Following the dedication ceremony, the firefighters allowed the students to look at the fire engine and have their photos taken with it.

Welcome!

Our chapter is made up of two chapters that began as one over 110 years ago. The Eschscholtzia Chapter, named for the California Golden Poppy, was organized on June 16, 1894, and was only the second DAR chapter to be organized in California. Mrs. Jesse Benton Fremont, wife of John C. Fremont, was a charter member and was elected the chapter's first regent. The Los Angeles Chapter was later organized on December 6, 1911, by a group of Eschscholtzia members who were seeking to have more effective participation. Both chapters continued to meet in the area called Hancock Park/Windsor Square. Many of the most influential people of Los Angeles at that time lived in this historic area and had been active members of these chapters.

In April 2005, Eschscholtzia and Los Angeles Chapters approved a merger that would once again join them as one chapter calling themselves the Los Angeles-Eschscholtzia Chapter. As a large chapter of 155 members, we reflect the diversity of the city in which we live. We are career women and homemakers, some with children and some with grandchildren. We have many two-generation family DAR members and one family in our chapter with three generations of members! Today the Los Angeles-Eschscholtzia Chapter holds the honor of being the oldest active DAR chapter in California. As in the past, we continue the tradition of serving high tea following every meeting.

The Los Angeles-Eschscholtzia Chapter meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, September through May at noon. If you would like to attend one of our meetings, please contact us.

We enthusiastically support our veterans and our military troops through local programs here and abroad. We provide supplies, phone cards, and letters of encouragement to our troops. We support our vets with gifts and live entertainment. We contribute much-needed money to the Wheelchair Olympics and other programs important to the care and well being of our veterans and returning Wounded Warriors.

In January, we sponsor a Women's Symposium that is a day of fun and education relating to women's issues. The all-day symposium, which is held in a casual atmosphere, offers the attendees an eclectic selection of classes and a delightful lunch. This event is open to the community and has received several national and state awards for promoting public relations and women's issues.

We support education for young and old through the National Society and California State Society as well as through our local schools. We sponsor students with DAR scholarships, provide support and awards to six local school ROTC programs, and award Good Citizen scholarships to outstanding local students.

Our chapter actively supports a Children of the American Revolution Society to help educate our children in American history and teach them to be better citizens. Our C.A.R. Society teaches children about community service, patriotism, and leadership.

We support the collection, restoration and preservation of manuscripts, documents, and historic fine and decorative art by supporting the DAR Library and the DAR Museum.

We are a group of ladies that not only love the projects that we support by donating time and money, but have an honest and loving respect for each other. Always encouraging the many individual talents of our chapter members, we enjoy working together. Come visit our meetings!

Any woman is eligible for membership in the DAR who is over 18 years of age and who can prove lineal, bloodline descent from a man or woman who aided in achieving American Independence during the period between April 19, 1775, and November 26, 1783. Information on membership in the DAR can be found here.

Soon you too will wish to join in and roll up your sleeves to work for the projects guided by the principles of DAR.
