Gold Trail Chapter History

Compiled by Mary Beth Watson

In the spring of 1977, several members of Emigrant Trail Chapter in Auburn began the discussion of the possibility of a new DAR Chapter in Roseville due to travel distance. Two of these ladies served Emigrant Trail as regents: Mrs. Charles K. Kemper and Mrs. Glen F. Minard. With regret, twelve members transferred to member-at-large.

In May, a meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Kemper and she agreed to be the organizing regent. The chapter name “Gold Trail” was chosen since Roseville is located in an area famous for the discovery of gold in 1848. The name was approved by the State and National Societies and with thirteen members; Gold Trail Chapter was officially instituted on October 14, 1977, with Mrs. Arthur Strehlow, CA State Regent, officiating. During the first year, membership increased to 18 members, including two Junior members.

Since the formation of the chapter, Gold Trail has been active with state, national, and local community projects:

Good Citizens medals are given to outstanding students in seven local high schools, up from two high schools since the chapter was founded; flags are presented to libraries, museums, and scouts, and to at least two new schools in the area each year; displays are created at three libraries for Constitution Week, Conservation, World War II, Korean War 50th Anniversary, Gold Trail’s 25th Anniversary, Women’s History Month, and Flag Day.

ROTC medals are given on both the high school and college level; medals and awards are presented to history teachers; Community Service, Conservation, and History medals are presented to local citizens and historic preservation organizations. The chapter participates at Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies and parades, commemorating Constitution Week and Fourth of July and plants trees in local parks for Arbor Day, Veterans Day, and to honor members. Books are donated to the California and National DAR libraries as well as local libraries; The City of Roseville displays a DAR Insignia sign; chairs have been donated at DAR Constitution Hall and the community Magic Circle Theatre.

Gold Trail is proud of its accomplishments as well as its members. Membership has grown from 13 to the present membership count of 90! Our plans are to exceed 100 this year.

The chapter is always represented at District Northern Council, State, and National conferences. In 30 years, the chapter has always attained achievements with Gold, Silver, and Honorable Mention or Level I status.

Several members have held National, State, and District chairmanships. A Junior member was State, Division and second runner-up as National Outstanding Junior; two members have served as District Directors; one member has served as California State Regent, Recording Secretary General, NSDAR President General (1995-1998), Honorary President General, (1995).
