Welcome!
The Pacific Grove Chapter was organized on September 29, 1922. Mrs. John W. Rhoads was the chapter's first regent. The chapter's name was changed in 1934 to Commodore Sloat because of the historical significance of Commodore John Drake Sloat to the area. Most members are from the Monterey Bay area; however, some members are from other areas as well. Local residency is not a requirement for membership in any chapter.
The Commodore Sloat Chapter meets on the 3rd Tuesday, September through May. If you would like to attend one of our meetings, please contact us.
On July 7, 1846, Commodore John Drake Sloat of the United States Navy landed in Monterey from his flagship the USS Savannah, and read the proclamation formally declaring California annexed to the United State of America, terminating the war with Mexico. He then had the American flag raised on the flagstaff at the Custom House.
“I declare to the inhabitants of California that, although I come in arms with a powerful force, I do not come among them as an enemy to California: on the contrary, I come as their best friend, as henceforward California will be a portion of the United States, and its peaceable inhabitants will enjoy the same rights and privileges as the citizens of any other portion of that Territory…”
Every year “Sloat’s Landing” is celebrated in Monterey on the weekend near July 7th with the reading of Sloat’s Proclamation. The Commodore Sloat Chapter Regent and members are invited to participate in this popular commemorative event. In 2003 for “Sloat’s Landing,” this chapter donated The 28 star Flag of the United States of America to represent the historic flag of 1846.
We welcome any woman for membership who is over 18 years of age and who is descended from a man or woman who aided in achieving American Independence during the period between April 19, 1775, and November 26, 1783. Information on membership in the DAR can be found here.
