What is DAR?

Founded in 1890, and by an Act of the United States Congress in 1896 DAR is an organization for women, dedicated to service of the nation. DAR has committees functioning at the local, state, and national levels. Its objectives are:

To perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women
who achieved American Independence.

To promote, as an object of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge, thus developing an enlightened public opinion and affording everyone such advantages to develop the largest capacity for performing the duties of American citizens.

To foster true patriotism and love of country, and to aid in securing for mankind all the blessings of liberty.

 

Who is eligible to join DAR?

Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than eighteen years of age and can prove lineal, blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence.  Click here for specific information regarding membership.

Admission to membership in the DAR is by invitation, either through a Chapter in your State Organization or Unit Overseas, or as a Member-At-Large. No Chapter may discriminate against an applicant on the basis of race or creed.
