AWARDS PRESENTED BY MOJAVE CHAPTER

AMERICAN HISTORY ESSAY

Open to students in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8. This year's topic was: "A Letter from Valley Forge, 1777-1778."  Twenty-three teachers from 14 schools had 524 students submit essays for our contest.  Mojave Chapter will present 11 cash awards and certificates in 2003:

Three award winners from Grade 5
Three award winners from Grade 6
Two award winners from Grade 7
Three award winners from Grade 8

The two first place winners from Grades 5 and 6 advanced, and their essays won at the District XII Level (Orange County, CA).

DAR PATRIOTISM AWARDS   (FORMERLY THE GOOD CITIZENSHIP MEDAL)

Designed to offer a concrete plan for training students in American citizenship, this award is presented to the graduating junior high school students who, by their acts and attitudes, have proven themselves to have the qualities of  honor, leadership and patriotism.   

Mojave will present three DAR Patriotism awards to students from local junior high schools in 2003.

GOOD CITIZEN AWARD AND PIN

This award is designed to promote dependability, service, leadership and patriotism among high school seniors. Students may also participate in the essay contest for cash awards. Nationwide, more than 8,000 students received awards totaling over $20,750.

Mojave Chapter will present five DAR Good Citizen Awards this year.        

RECOGNITION RECEIVED  OR GIVEN IN RECENT YEARS

DAR DISTRICT XII
Consists of 11 chapters.

1999 American History Essay Contest Winners:  two students recognized.

CALIFORNIA STATE SOCIETY DAR
Consists of 14 districts.

1999 DAR Good Citizen: Honorable Mention

1999 Program Award: First Place - Ms. Tawny Little; "Life in the Newsroom."

1999 Motion Picture, Radio & Television Committee: First Place (tie) - Ms. Tawny Little; "Life in the Newsroom."

SOUTHWEST DIVISION
Consists of 14 western States.

1999 Program Award: First Place - Ms. Tawny Little; "Life in the Newsroom."

NSDAR NATIONAL
Consists of 50 states and 12 overseas units.  1999: Ms. Tawny Little "Life in the Newsroom."

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD - 1998
Presented to Fullerton Police Chief Patrick E. McKinley by Mojave Chapter. This medal is given to recognize worthy, local individuals for outstanding achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic  and citizenship work within their communities. On his own time, Chief McKinley speaks to and educates women of all ages in the Orange and Los Angeles County areas about how to recognize danger and protect themselves from attack.

COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD - 2002
Presented to Dr. Charles L. Kissel by Mojave Chapter.  Dr. Kissel owns the world's largest collection of replicas of historic American flags.  He spends his free time educating people about the United States flag.

AMERICANISM AWARD
The NSDAR Americanism Medal is awarded to a naturalized United States citizen who has demonstrated outstanding contributions to their community.  In 2002, Mojave Chapter presented the Americanism Award to Mrs. Rafaela Flores.

CONSERVATION COMMITTEE NSDAR AWARD - 1999
Presented to LeNelle Cittadin by Mojave Chapter for her work with the Fullerton Arboretum to create a Partnership with Schools program designed to teach conservation and environment to school children.

MOST HONORED CHAPTER MEMBER
Marion Kaump: Past  Reporter General; Past Vice-President General; Honorary State Regent; Speakers Staff; Advisor to the State Board 1994-1996; Honorary Chapter Regent for Life.
