The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) is an organization for women ages 18 and over who are directly descended from American Revolutionary Soldiers, Sailors, or Patriots (men and women who supported the Revolutionary effort). It is a non-profit, non-political, volunteer service organization with over 170,000 women in 3,000 chapters in each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, Australia, Canada, France, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.
The NSDAR was founded on October 11, 1890. It's goals are to strengthen the nation and preserve its heritage through its objectives of historical preservation, promotion of education, and patriotic endeavor. The motto is "God, Home and Country." The DAR mission statement is, "The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a lineage organization which enables women to serve their God, family, and nation through the preservation of American heritage, promotion of educational opportunities, and encouragement of active citizenship." NSDAR Home Page Membership In the NSDAR is a unique opportunity to establish one's lineage and heritage as a descendant of a patriot of the American Revolution. Any woman is eligible for membership who is no less than 18 years of age and can prove lineage blood line descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence. She must provide documentation for each generation of birth, marriage, death, and connection to parent. Admission to the NSDAR is either by invitation through a chapter in your state society (or Unit Overseas) or as a Member-At-Large. No chapter may discriminate against an applicant on the basis of race or creed. NSDAR Membership Page NSDAR has information on the acceptability of all service and proof for the period between 19 April 1775 (Battle of Lexington) and 26 November 1783 (withdrawal of British troops from New York). The DAR Patriotic Index lists all documented Patriots. The current DAR Patriot Index is on the internet which can be accessed by members of DAR only.
