Chapter Focus

 

The Captain John Oldham Chapter focuses its membership participation in the following areas:

 

Historic PreservationRegent, Karen Keabey, giving donation of land record microfilm to Steve Fjeldsted, Nevada County Librarian, and Maria Brower, Foley Librarian.

 

We support these local historic preservation projects

1) Restoration of North Star  house designed by Julia Morgan

2) Miner's Foundry

3) Nevada Theater - oldest continuous theater in California

4) Presented a Community Service Award to Liz McAteer for her leadership in the Miner's Foundry preservation effort

5) Presented a Community Service Award to  Ed Tyson for his role in organizing and preserving historic Nevada County Records

 

Genealogy

1) Provided historic Nevada County Land Records microfilm to Foley History Library

2) Donated NSDAR Patriot Index to local Family History Center

3) Our members are encouraged to actively participate and provide leadership in preserving family history within the community.

4) NSDAR Library books are donated on Nevada County history and genealogy.

5) Presented a Community Service Award to Maria Brower for her leadership in Nevada County genealogy, and for preserving, and teaching about the Gold Country records.

 

Promotion of Education

Lewis and Clark Reenactment Union Hill School1) Local schools - books are donated annually to the public school libraries on subjects pertinent to the founding period of American history.  American History - American History certificates and medals are awarded by the DAR each year to children in 5th through 8th grades to promote knowledge of American History.  Our chapter supports this American History Essay contest and annually presents awards at the local, state, and national levels.

2) Scholarships are available for high school and graduate level students.  Many local high school students have received state level scholarships.

Patriotic EndeavorGranite bench which was donated for the Veterans Wall at Grass Valley Memorial Park.

1) Constitution Week - The NSDAR initiated Constitution Week (September 17-23) in 1956.  Captain John Oldham chapter participates in the Constitution Day Parade held on the 2nd Sunday in September in Nevada City.  This community celebration has been publicized as one of the best Constitutional commemorations in the United States

2) Good Citizen Award - The DAR Good Citizen Committee, established in 1934 by NSDAR, recognizes senior high school students who excel in qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.  Approximately 11,000 schools participate each year.  This award is given annually by our chapter.

3) Flag Committee - donation of the American flag to local schools and fire stations; flag collection for retirement ceremonies

4) Service to Veterans - our members aid in supporting:

a) Nevada County Veterans Stand Down

b) Memorial Day and Veterans Day activities

c) Military serving overseas, and Travis AFB USO

d) Visitation of Vietnam Memorial Wall

e) WWII Memorial in Washington, DC

5) Presented a Community Service Award to Mike Dillman for outstanding veteran's support
